For years, Japan sat in the "dream trip" category — clients loved the idea but flinched at the price. That's no longer the conversation. A weak yen, new direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai, and over 3.15 lakh Indian visitors in 2025 alone have moved Japan from aspirational to actionable. Agents who still pitch it as "expensive" are leaving money on the table.

The Visa Reality Agents Need to Know

Japan requires Indian travelers to apply for a visa in advance — there is no visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry. This is the single biggest difference from a Thailand or Dubai pitch, and it needs to be positioned as a planning step, not a dealbreaker.

What to tell clients:

  • eVisa (tourism, single entry): Available for Indians through JATA-accredited travel agencies, processed via consulates in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Decision typically in 3–5 working days.

  • Standard paper visa: Applied through VFS Global centres in 12 Indian cities. Processing takes 5–10 working days. Walk-ins are no longer accepted at several centres (Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai) — appointment booking is now mandatory.

  • Documents: Passport (6+ months validity), day-by-day itinerary, confirmed flights and hotel bookings, 6-month bank statements, ITR for 2–3 years, employment letter. The itinerary carries the most weight in the decision.

  • Cost: Among the lowest for a developed country — roughly ₹1,300–1,500 total including VFS service charges.

  • Lead time advice: Tell clients to start 4–6 weeks before travel. During cherry blossom season (March–April), appointment slots at Mumbai and Chennai fill within minutes.

Because visa rules shift with little notice, confirm the current process before every client quote — don't rely on last season's information.

Why Japan Sells Right Now

Three things have changed the math for Indian travelers:

The yen is historically weak. The rupee buys 20–25% more in Japan than it did in 2019. A quality meal costs ₹220–330 at a convenience store. A 4-star hotel room in several Japanese cities now costs less than a premium Indian hill station in peak summer. Japan is currently cheaper than Singapore for food and transport.

Direct flights are finally real. Air India flies Delhi–Tokyo Haneda daily, and launches Mumbai–Tokyo Haneda from June 2026 (4x weekly). Japan Airlines started Delhi–Tokyo Narita in January 2026. ANA is adding Mumbai–Tokyo Haneda. One-stop options via Singapore, Bangkok, or Seoul bring round-trip fares to ₹35,000–55,000.

Client trust is building fast. 3,15,100 Indians visited Japan in 2025 — a 35% jump over 2024. Social media has done the heavy lifting on awareness. Clients aren't asking "why Japan?" anymore — they're asking "how do I do Japan?"

Breaking Japan Into Sellable Regions

Tokyo — The anchor city. Shibuya Crossing, Senso-ji Temple, Akihabara electronics district, Tsukiji Outer Market for street food. Works for every segment — first-timers, families, couples. The non-negotiable starting point for any Japan itinerary.

Osaka — The food capital and the natural second city. Dotonbori street food, Osaka Castle, Universal Studios Japan for families. More relaxed, more affordable than Tokyo, and an easy bullet train ride away. Best positioned as the "fun add-on" to Tokyo.

Kyoto — The culture play. Fushimi Inari's thousand torii gates, bamboo groves, traditional tea houses, geisha district. This is where the Instagram moments live. The strongest upsell for couples and repeat travelers who want depth, not just sightseeing.

Hakone & Mount Fuji — The day-trip hero. A 90-minute train from Tokyo, hot spring resorts, lake cruises with Fuji views. Requires zero extra planning and photographs like a premium add-on. Easy to bundle into any Tokyo-based itinerary.

How to Pitch This Right Now

  • Lead with the price shift — "Japan costs less than Singapore right now" is the hook that breaks the old "expensive" perception

  • Position the visa as a planning step you handle, not a hurdle the client worries about

  • For first-timers, anchor on Tokyo + Osaka as the safe, proven combination (5N/6D or 6N/7D)

  • For couples and honeymooners, lead with Kyoto + Hakone — slower pace, visual appeal, premium feel

  • Autumn (October–November) is the immediate pitch window — pleasant weather, fewer crowds than cherry blossom season, and stunning foliage that rivals sakura for client photos

Who to Pitch It To

First-time international travelers: Tokyo + Osaka, familiar enough (street food, shopping, theme parks) to feel safe, different enough to feel like a real international trip

Couples and honeymooners: Kyoto + Hakone, traditional ryokan stays, private temple visits, scenic bullet train rides

Families: Tokyo (Senso-ji, Akihabara, Shibuya) + Osaka (Universal Studios, Dotonbori), low-fatigue and kid-friendly

Repeat Asia travelers: The client who's done Thailand and Bali twice — Japan is the next step up without jumping to Europe pricing

Premium and MICE groups: Kyoto + Tokyo, high-quality infrastructure, punctual transport, and a destination that signals sophistication
