Objection Handling 101: What to Say When a Client Thinks It's "Too Expensive"
Every travel agent has heard it. You've put together the perfect itinerary, priced it fairly, and just when you think the deal is closing — "This is too expensive, can you lower it?"
It's easily the most common objection in this business, and yet most agents still respond the wrong way — either dropping the price immediately (killing your margin) or getting defensive (killing the conversation). Neither actually closes the deal.
Here's the thing: "too expensive" is rarely about the number itself. It's a signal, not a rejection. Your job isn't to argue with the price — it's to understand what's actually behind that sentence and respond accordingly. Let's break down how.
First, Understand What "Too Expensive" Actually Means
When a client says this, they usually mean one of three things:
"I don't see the value yet" — they haven't connected the price to what they're actually getting.
"I'm comparing you to a cheaper option" — real or imagined, they've seen a lower number somewhere.
"I'm just testing you" — some clients say this reflexively, even when the price is fair, just to see if there's room to negotiate.
Each of these needs a different response. Treating all three the same way is where most agents lose the sale.
The Fix: Reframe Before You Discount
1. When They Don't See the Value
Don't repeat the price — break it down. Clients don't push back on cost, they push back on unclear cost.
Say this instead of discounting: "Totally understand — let me quickly walk you through what's actually included, because a lot of clients are surprised once they see everything bundled in."
Then walk through it: flights, stay, transfers, curated activities, on-ground support, 24x7 assistance. Most of the time, the "expensive" package suddenly looks like a lot of value for the price — because now they can see it.
2. When They're Comparing You to Something Cheaper
Don't get defensive about the comparison — get curious about it.
Say this: "That's helpful to know — can I ask what that package includes? Sometimes the base price looks lower, but things like transfers, activities, or support get added later."
Nine times out of ten, the "cheaper" option is missing something yours includes, or it's a lower-tier hotel, or it doesn't have on-ground support. Let the client discover that gap themselves — it lands far better than you pointing it out.
3. When They're Just Testing the Waters
Hold your ground, calmly and confidently.
Say this: "I get it, everyone wants the best possible price. This is priced fairly for what's included, and honestly, I'd rather be upfront with you now than surprise you with hidden costs later."
Confidence here matters more than the words themselves. Clients can tell when an agent is unsure of their own pricing — and that uncertainty is what invites more negotiation, not less.
What NOT to Do
Don't discount immediately. It signals that your original price wasn't the real price, and clients will always push for more next time.
Don't over-explain or apologize. You're not doing anything wrong by pricing your service fairly.
Don't badmouth competitors. Focus on your value, not their shortcomings.
When a Discount Actually Makes Sense
Objection handling doesn't mean never negotiating — it means negotiating on your terms. If you do decide to flex on price, don't just lower the number. Trade it for something:
A slightly adjusted itinerary (fewer inclusions, same value)
Off-peak dates instead of peak season
A smaller group size or shorter duration
This way, the client feels like they got a win, and you're not just eating into your own margin for nothing.
The Bigger Skill Behind This
At its core, objection handling isn't about scripts — it's about confidence in your pricing and clarity in your value. The agents who consistently close high-value bookings aren't the ones who discount the fastest. They're the ones who can explain, calmly and clearly, exactly why the price is what it is.
That confidence comes from knowing your product inside out — which is exactly why having a platform that gives you transparent pricing, clear inclusions, and reliable support behind every package matters so much. When you know exactly what you're selling and why it's priced that way, "too expensive" stops feeling like a threat and starts feeling like just another conversation to navigate.
Next time you hear it, pause before you react. Understand what's really being said — and respond to that, not just the words.
